Prepare for your cake smash photoshoot

Over the last several years, I have photographed more cake smashes than I can count. There are a few things that the most successful ones have in common!

•Have a consistent photographer. I’ve noticed a huge difference in sessions where they are a returning client. When babies have been in my studio multiple times, they're more comfortable with me. More importantly, parents are also comfortable with me. When you trust your photographer, it makes everything go smoothly!

•Make sure they are comfortable in their outfit! If the sleeve keeps falling down, it's itchy, or get's in the way of movement- baby will be focused on that and often become irritated.

•No new fancy flavors- in fact, I recommend their favorite food instead. It doesn’t even have to be cake! Sweet potato pancakes, yogurt banana, and fruit are super popular! Keep reading for some recipes!

•If you really want a cake, the session shouldn’t be the first time they’ve had it (if you want them to dig in, anyway!) Some places like walmart, often offer a free small first birthday cake!

•NO fondant- it’s a choking hazard. I know the big pretty cakes are gorgeous… but the baby can’t eat it.

•Remember to bring milk/water! It never fails that they need to take a break and are thirsty

•Remember extra wipes, and change of clothes- these get messy!

•Plan around nap and meal time! I always ask parents about nap time- we want baby happy. I also say let’s do it before lunch so they’re hungry LOL

Recipes and Cake Alternatives

Waffle Stack- make your own, or Eggos work too! Put whipped cream and/or fruit in between!

Milk Bath- Does your baby LOVE splashing in the tub? Let's do a milk bath instead! We can even add their favorite fruits!

Sweet Potato Pancakes- I'll link my favorite recipe- you can layer them with whipped cream or vanilla icing to really mimic a cake!

Banana Yogurt Pancakes- I'll link my favorite recipe- you can layer with whipped cream, vanilla yogurt, or vanilla icing to really mimic a cake!

Their Favorite Food- It doesn't have to be desert! We can use steak, spaghetti, fruit tray, pizza, anything they love!

Berry-first-cake (low to no sugar)-This is a great alternative if you're cautious about refined sugar! Using fruits and applesauce to sweeten instead!

Watermelon cake-This is just fruit, shaped like a cake!
